How parents can track progress in online tuition
The biggest worry with online tuition is invisibility: “Is my child actually learning?” Strong providers make attendance, work quality and assessment trends visible to parents.
You should not have to sit outside your child’s room listening in to know whether tuition is working. Good reporting answers three questions without you having to ask: did they attend, did they do the work, and is it getting better?
1. What good reporting includes
- Weekly attendance records
- Assignments with teacher feedback
- Periodic assessments with scores/topics
- A scheduled parent update (app message, call or report)
- Clear goals for the next 2–4 weeks
2. Weak evidence vs strong evidence
Chat-only “updates” without assessments are weak evidence. Prefer systems that show what was taught, what was tested and what improved.
“Class went well today” tells you very little. “Covered simultaneous equations; scored 6/10 on the quiz, mostly sign errors; will revisit next class” tells you exactly where your child stands.
3. What you can do at home
Reports are most useful when they turn into a short conversation, not a lecture.
- Ask your child to explain one thing they learned this week, in their own words
- Look at a marked assignment together, focusing on the teacher’s comments rather than the score
- Check the camera is on and the space is quiet during class
- Keep class times consistent so tuition becomes a routine, not a negotiation
- Raise concerns with the teacher early, not at the end of the term
4. Inkstall Student App
Inkstall uses the Student App for attendance tracking, assignments and academic progress monitoring, alongside live online classes and parent conversations when needed.
5. The one-month check
After the first month, you should be able to answer: What topics improved? What is still weak? How many sessions were attended?
If you cannot answer those questions, ask the provider directly. It is a fair question, and a good tutor will have the answers ready.
