Parents (and students) often ask the same question at Inkstall:

"We've bought the IGCSE Maths textbook… do we really need a workbook as well?"

And if yes… "Which workbook will actually help with exam-style questions, not just random practice?"

The problem is simple: there are too many IGCSE Maths resources and very little clarity on how they differ.

In this blog, we'll look at:

  • What makes a good IGCSE Maths workbook
  • The main types of workbooks and resource packs (with real examples)
  • Which ones are best for Core vs Extended, and C-grade vs A* students
  • How to use a workbook so it actually improves exam performance

This is written mainly with Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580/0980) in mind, but most ideas carry over to Edexcel International GCSE Maths too.

1. First, What Should a "Good" IGCSE Maths Workbook Do?

A lot of so-called workbooks are either:

  • Just extra notes (little real practice), or
  • Very random questions that don't match the latest exam style

A good IGCSE Maths workbook should:

  • Be clearly aligned to your syllabus code (0580 or 0980 for Cambridge; or Edexcel International GCSE).
  • Use exam-style questions – same command words, layout and mark demand as real papers.
  • Organise questions by topic (Number, Algebra, Graphs, Geometry, Trig, etc.), ideally matching the syllabus sequence.
  • Offer a range of difficulty:
    • Routine skills
    • Mixed questions
    • "A*-style" problem-solving for Extended students
  • Include answers or full worked solutions (not just final answers), so students can learn from mistakes.
  • Match the current syllabus dates (e.g. support "for examination from 2025") so content and style are up to date.

Keep these criteria in mind as we walk through the options.

2. Category 1 – Official Cambridge-Endorsed IGCSE Maths Workbooks

These are workbooks that are explicitly built for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580/0980) and are often endorsed by Cambridge International.

2.1 Hodder: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Core and Extended Workbook

Published by Hodder Education, aligned to syllabus 0580 for exams from 2025.

Designed as a homework/practice companion to the main Hodder coursebook.

Includes plenty of exam-style questions and end-of-chapter tasks.

Strengths

  • Very close alignment to the official Cambridge syllabus, with clear "Core vs Extended" labelling.
  • Good for steady, structured practice after each topic is taught in school.
  • Works well in tuition settings where the teacher sets specific pages as homework.

Best for

  • Students in schools that already use the Hodder coursebook.
  • Students who like a traditional textbook + workbook combination.

2.2 Collins: Cambridge IGCSE™ Maths Workbook

A Collins workbook that explicitly supports Cambridge IGCSE and IGCSE (9–1) Maths 0580/0980.

The product description states that it provides "exam-style questions for every topic".

Strengths

  • Heavily focused on exam-style practice, not long theory notes.
  • Covers every topic on the syllabus, so it's easy to use as a checklist.
  • Pairs nicely with Collins' Cambridge IGCSE Maths Student's Book.

Best for

  • Students who want a lean practice book (less reading, more sums).
  • Those preparing for both 0580 and 0980 (9–1) versions.

2.3 Oxford: Complete Mathematics for Cambridge IGCSE®

Oxford's "Complete Mathematics for Cambridge IGCSE" range (often known as Complete Mathematics Extended/Core) is a full series rather than just a workbook, but:

  • The student book and companion resources provide extensive graduated practice for 0580.
  • Many schools (and parents) treat this as a coursebook + built-in workbook because of the high number of exam-style questions.

Strengths

  • A very thorough resource – deep explanation plus lots of practice.
  • Strong support for Extended students aiming for A/A*.

Watch out for

Make sure you're buying the correct edition (e.g., 6th edition aligned to the latest syllabus) – older editions were for exams up to 2019.

Best for

  • Students who don't want to buy separate coursebook and workbook.
  • Stronger students who enjoy slightly more challenging questions and full explanations.

3. Category 2 – Topical Past-Paper Workbooks ("Exam Packs in Book Form")

These are not traditional "workbooks" written from scratch. They are collections of real past-paper questions, sorted by topic, often with mark schemes.

3.1 Topical Past Papers – PapaCambridge / Eminent / Others

Websites like PapaCambridge host topical past-paper compilations for IGCSE Maths 0580, where questions are grouped by topic (Number, Algebra & Graphs, Geometry, etc.).

There are also PDF "topical past paper question workbooks" (e.g., Examinent/Eminent-style) that describe themselves as:

  • Hundreds of questions organised by chapter and topic
  • With corresponding answer schemes in workbook/worksheet format

Strengths

  • These are real exam questions, not just similar ones.
  • Fantastic for targeting weak topics (e.g., "today only algebra & graphs").
  • Very useful in the last 3–6 months before exams.

Watch out for

  • Quality and layout vary depending on the publisher/site.
  • Some sets may not include full worked solutions – only mark schemes.
  • You must verify they match the current syllabus years (2022–2027 etc.).

Best for

  • Students already comfortable with basics who want pure exam practice.
  • Tuition centres and teachers who want ready-made topic tests.

3.2 SmartExamResources / igcsemaths.in and Similar Sites

Platforms like SmartExamResources and igcsemaths.in provide topic-wise past-paper worksheets with solutions, specifically for 0580 Extended.

You can print these and use them exactly like a workbook.

Strengths

  • Fine-grained sub-topic organisation (e.g., not just "algebra" but specific skills).
  • Great for systematic revision with a teacher/tutor.

Best for

  • Extended students targeting A/A*.
  • Self-motivated students comfortable working off PDFs.

4. Category 3 – Digital "Workbooks": Online Question Banks

In 2025, some of the best "workbooks" aren't printed. They're digital.

4.1 Save My Exams – Topic Questions & Exam Packs

Save My Exams offers a large bank of Cambridge IGCSE Maths (0580/0980) exam-style questions, arranged by topic, with answers and downloadable PDFs.

While it's a subscription platform, many schools and private students use it as their main exam-style practice resource.

Strengths

  • Very exam-focused; questions feel close to actual papers.
  • Easy to filter by topic and difficulty.
  • Answers and mark schemes are immediately accessible.

Best for

  • Students who like working digitally or printing topic sets as needed.
  • Those who have already finished basic textbook practice and want structured exam preparation.

4.2 Other Online Banks & Apps

There are growing numbers of:

  • IGCSE Maths practice portals with topic-wise questions + analytics
  • Apps that generate random IGCSE-style questions

Quality varies, so check:

  • Are questions clearly aligned with 0580/0980 content?
  • Do they provide mark-scheme-style solutions (not just final answers)?

If those two boxes are ticked, they can function like a digital workbook.

5. So… Which Type of Workbook Is Right for Your Child?

Instead of chasing "the best book overall", pick based on your child's starting point and goals.

5.1 If your child is struggling / aiming for C–B

Focus on:

  • One endorsed workbook (Hodder or Collins) that matches their syllabus
  • Plus some topical past-paper packs towards the end of the year

Why: Endorsed workbooks break questions down into manageable steps, often with more routine practice.

5.2 If your child is doing okay but wants A–A*

Focus on:

  • A strong "all-in-one" series such as Oxford Complete Mathematics or Hodder + workbook for deep coverage
  • Plus topical past-paper workbooks (PapaCambridge, SmartExamResources, etc.)
  • Plus a digital bank like Save My Exams for high-frequency exam-style questions

5.3 If your child is a private candidate / self-studying

Minimum kit:

  • One good coursebook (Hodder / Collins / Oxford)
  • One workbook that matches it
  • Access to past papers and topical packs (printed or PDF)

Plus:

A clear study plan so they don't just flip pages randomly.

6. How to Use Any IGCSE Maths Workbook So It Actually Helps

Buying the right workbook is only 50% of the story. The rest is how your child uses it.

Here's a simple method we use with Inkstall students:

Step 1 – Align Workbook Topics with School / Tuition Sequence

  • When school finishes, say, Linear Graphs, you do that exact section in the workbook.
  • Tick topics off a syllabus checklist (0580/0980) as you go.

Step 2 – "Two-Pass" System for Questions

For each exercise or topic:

Pass 1 – Warm-up

  • Do every question without timing.
  • Focus on understanding the method.

Pass 2 – Exam-mode mini-set

  • Take 4–6 questions from that topic.
  • Do them under exam-style timing (e.g., 1–1.5 mins per mark).
  • Mark with the mark scheme and note where marks were lost.

Step 3 – Maintain a Mistake Log

Keep a small notebook / Google Doc with:

  • The question (or topic)
  • What went wrong
  • Correct working and key idea

Every weekend, review the Mistake Log and pick 1–2 "problem topics" for extra questions from the workbook or a topical past-paper pack.

Step 4 – Combine Workbooks with Real Papers

From 4–6 months before the exam:

Use workbooks mainly for:

  • Targeted repair (weak topics)
  • Extra drilling of specific skills

Use past papers (full papers, timed) as the main measure of exam readiness.

7. How We Use Workbooks with Inkstall Students

At Inkstall, we don't push one brand, but we do follow a structure:

  • Check the student's board (Cambridge / Edexcel), syllabus code and school book.
  • Choose one main workbook compatible with what school is using (often Hodder/Collins/Oxford).
  • Add topical past-paper packs for Algebra, Graphs, Trig, etc., to intensify practice closer to exams.

Use digital platforms like Save My Exams or other topic banks for:

  • Quick diagnostic mini-tests
  • Homework sets between classes

In class, we work through:

  • Tough workbook questions
  • Past-paper questions on the same skill
  • Detailed marking and "how the examiner thinks"

For parents, this means you don't have to guess which titles to buy or how to use them. We map your child's goals (C, B, A, A*) to a clear combination of textbook, workbook and past-paper resources.
