More and more Indian families are choosing IGCSE as private candidates – especially homeschoolers, students changing boards, or children whose schools don’t offer all the subjects they want.

The good news: you can sit IGCSE in India as a private candidate.

The tricky part: you must register correctly through an approved exam centre, not directly with Cambridge.

This guide walks you through the full process, from choosing subjects to getting your Statement of Entry.

1. First, Understand What “Private Candidate” Means

A private candidate is a student who:

  • Studies independently or with a tutor / coaching class
  • Is not formally enrolled in the school or exam centre where they sit the exam
  • Registers only to take the exams, not to attend regular classes

Important: All exam arrangements happen with the centre, not directly with Cambridge.

2. Step 1 – Choose Your Exam Board and Subjects

There are two main IGCSE-style boards Indian private candidates usually use: Cambridge IGCSE (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE.

Which subjects?

Typical private-candidate combinations are:

  • English (First Language or ESL)
  • Maths
  • 2–3 Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Combined Science)
  • 1–2 Humanities (Economics, Business, Geography, History, Global Perspectives)

Tip from Inkstall: Before locking your list, speak to a tutor or counsellor who knows both the syllabus and your future plans (IB, A-levels, Indian 11–12, etc.), so you don’t accidentally drop a subject you’ll need later.

3. Step 2 – Decide Your Exam Session (May/June or Oct/Nov)

Most IGCSE centres in India offer two main exam series: May/June and October/November. Each series has a normal entry deadline, a late entry window (with extra fees), and sometimes a very late window.

If you want results ready for Indian Grade 11 admissions, the May/June series of that year is usually safest.

4. Step 3 – Find an Exam Centre in India That Accepts Private Candidates

You cannot just walk into any IGCSE school and register; the centre must agree to host private candidates. There are two main ways to find a centre:

4.1 Use Cambridge’s “Find a Centre” / Private Candidate Info

Use their website to search for Cambridge schools in your city/state and contact them individually to ask if they accept private candidates.

4.2 Register Through British Council (Where Available)

British Council runs a central online system for private candidates in many countries. Check the British Council India site for the latest information.

5. Step 4 – Create Your Online Account / Get the Centre’s Form

Depending on the route you use, you will either sign up on the British Council's portal or fill out a form from the school directly. This will involve providing personal details, subject codes, and required documents like photos and ID copies.

6. Step 5 – Pay Exam Fees

Your registration is not complete until payment is made. You will either pay online through the British Council portal or directly to the school, which will include their administrative charges.

7. Step 6 – Receive Your Statement of Entry & Timetable

After registration, you’ll receive a Statement of Entry and timetable. It’s your responsibility to check that all details are correct and contact the centre immediately if there are any errors.

8. Step 7 – Sit the Exams

On every exam day, you must carry a valid ID and allowed stationery. The centre will verify your identity and conduct the exam under board rules.

9. Step 8 – Results, Re-checks and Certificates

Results are released to centres on specific dates. Any requests for re-marking must be made through the same centre. Your official certificate will be sent to the centre for collection.

10. Common Mistakes Indian Private Candidates Make

  • Leaving registration too late.
  • Choosing subjects that don’t allow private candidates.
  • Confusing IGCSE with ICSE/CBSE rules.
  • Not planning for what comes after IGCSE.
  • Underestimating the workload.
